Following on the theme of our November 2013 discussion, this session tackled the difficult job of finding commonality within a community of humanists. As often happens with open discussions on values, it fell short of its goal, though it did provide insight about how different people approach the idea of humanism.
The introduction provided a good overview of humanism, using quotations from a diverse group including R. Joseph Hoffman, Ojo Taylor, Robert Ingersoll, Carl Coon, Paul Kurtz, Michael Ruse, and Robert M. Price.
The focus of the discussion, our responses to a questionnaire encouraging a personal look at our relationship with humanism. The perennial “atheism” vs “humanism” debate diverted the conversation away from the questionnaire, unfortunately.
